Plaster Moldings - Transformations Changing the Face of Buildings

Centuries ago, it was reserved only for buildings inhabited by the aristocracy. Today it is widely available, but that does not change the fact that it is still associated with luxury and sophisticated elegance. We're talking about moldings, which have been experiencing a true renaissance in recent years, attracting the attention of design enthusiasts. Moldings were born in ancient times but had their moment mainly during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. They were indispensable in richly decorated Romanesque buildings as well as in the soaring, ambitious Gothic structures.

Plaster moldings were most commonly created on vaults. They were also prevalent around portals. The most popular motifs were floral and religious. In the Renaissance era, one of the leading motifs in moldings was the Putto – a small angel with wings, stylistically referencing the ancient god Eros. Another revival of moldings occurred at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries when cornices, rosettes, ornaments, and other decorations flourished on building façades. With the advent of modernism and postmodernism, plaster moldings almost completely disappeared. Initially, they were abandoned on façades, and then they also stopped appearing in building interiors. Today, we can observe the return of this unique art of decorating façades and interiors. Although contemporary architecture draws heavily from Romanesque, Gothic, and classical achievements, it is worth noting that the material has changed—difficult-to-work stone is often replaced by soft, pliable plaster. Increasingly, styrofoam and polyurethane appear in moldings, subsequently covered with quartz or acrylic mass. Thanks to this, they are exceptionally durable and resistant to adverse weather conditions. This transformation has made decorations, which centuries ago were available to a narrow circle of recipients, increasingly popular today, thus satisfying the aesthetic needs of those dreaming of an original building façade and a beautiful interior with a hint of luxury.

Plaster Moldings

Gypsum moldings have been appearing in interiors for many years. Until recently, plaster moldings were associated exclusively with avant-garde arrangements. They were used in interiors that did not lack splendor and palace-like elegance. Today, they prove that they can perfectly suit not only as a decorative element in rooms styled in glamour, retro, or art deco but also excellently adorn modern interiors. It is estimated that well-made and well-chosen interior moldings can increase property value by up to 20%.

Interior moldings made of plaster have many advantages. In this case, the key to success is the material itself. Ecological, lightweight, and pliable, it allows for creating even very complex patterns and reaching hard-to-access places. Plaster is also non-flammable and resistant to adverse factors, such as temperature fluctuations in rooms, humidity, or UV radiation. It allows perfectly connecting individual interior moldings in such a way as to create an ideally smooth and seamless whole. It is also worth noting that interior plaster moldings can be painted in any color.

Plaster Moldings - Is it Worth it?

The answer to this question can only be affirmative. In the Stucco Workshop DW DECOR, which offers impressive plaster moldings, there is no shortage of varied finishing elements that not only individually define the style of the arrangement but also complete it and allow achieving a consistent, interesting result. They also serve a practical function. Facets enable aesthetic finishing at the junction of two planes and allow hiding any finishing flaws or concealing wires routed to a specific place in the room. Plaster cornices are also excellent for masking LED lighting. On the other hand, plaster wall strips, columns, half-columns, or pilasters balance the proportions of the interior.

Elements mounted in the horizontal plane optically lower the room, while vertical ones allow achieving a soaring effect. It is also an excellent way to hide minor imperfections on the walls—cracks or irregularities—or to combine materials of different textures or colors. Plaster moldings give walls a sense of depth and make flat surfaces appear three-dimensional. They also create an interesting setting for ceiling lamps, windows, door openings, and even fireplaces, fitting into the style in which the interior is decorated.

Plaster moldings can be chosen from a wide range of different decorative elements, including:

Ceiling strips – are the basic element of interior moldings. They provide an excellent finish to the interior and mask imperfections at the junction of the ceiling and wall. Optically, they raise and enlarge the space. The variety of patterns allows them to be adapted to the character of the arrangement. In modern interiors, simple ceiling strips work well. In spaces arranged in retro style or in restored buildings from past epochs, heavily decorated facets of plaster decorated with an original floral pattern are a good choice.

Facets – these are molding elements mounted under the ceiling. They often have a slightly rounded shape and allow creating a gentle transition between the wall and the ceiling. They excellently mask curvatures, dirt, and imperfections of the plaster. Among them, one can find models maintained in a minimalist style, which perfectly match modern arrangements. In retro spaces or restored, historic buildings, on the other hand, decorative facets with a pattern work well.

Lighting strips – these are molding elements that allow the incorporation of LED strips. Thanks to this, lighting strips can create the main type of lighting in a room or serve as elements illuminating specific places in the space. They usually come in the form of façades that do not directly adjoin the ceiling. Their advantage is that with the light off, they constitute an elegant interior decoration. Wall lighting strips in the form of frames or bands also deserve attention, working well both on large wall surfaces and in small niches.

Wall strips – are one of the most commonly encountered molding elements. They allow creating various decorations – both minimalist, fitting into modern spaces, and avant-garde, perfect for retro arrangements. They work well on large wall surfaces. They can also constitute an interesting setting for mirrors, posters, or other decorations. Plaster wall strips visually model the proportions of the room and give the walls a three-dimensional effect.

Rosettes – these are molding elements usually based on a circle or ellipse plan, less often a square or polygon. They are most often mounted on ceilings, encircling a chandelier or lamp. Along with other molding variants, they can constitute an interesting wall decoration. Models richly decorated with plant motifs work well in retro spaces. They are also an ideal complement to the decor of restored buildings from centuries ago. On the other hand, simple and ceiling rosettes with parallel indentations are a way to bring original, elegant aesthetics into modern spaces.

Consoles – are one of the most decorative elements. Consoles often appear in combination with molding elements that form internal window bands. They also look good in a duo with columns and pilasters. They can also be mounted under the ceiling or on the wall – as a decorative shelf for small, light decorations.

Corners – these are elements that allow in an interesting and original way to connect two ceiling or wall strips at a right angle. They are a necessary element when creating molding frames for mirrors, posters, or paintings. The variety of corner gips allows them to be perfectly matched to the character of the arrangement. Alongside models richly decorated with floral motifs and ornaments, there are also corners maintained in a minimalist style and perfectly fitting into modern spaces.

Boiseries – these are quite large molding elements, usually taking the form of panels decorated with an ornament or floral pattern. Their advantage is that they can be combined with each other, creating an interesting and original arrangement. Boiseries not only serve a decorative function but also a practical one. They visually enlarge the space and allow dividing it into zones. They excellently mask imperfections on the walls and can be an idea for a quick interior transformation.

Moldings for Façade Styling

Exterior moldings are primarily associated with historic buildings dating back many centuries, previously moldings made of plaster. However, they are increasingly appearing in contemporary construction. Architects argue that they are one of the most elegant decorations, thanks to which every façade gains a stylish look and a touch of luxury. For which buildings can exterior moldings be used? The answer is simple – for all. It is a decorative element that does not place high demands on the design or finishing of the façade. It is perfectly suitable for newly constructed buildings as well as those undergoing renovation. It works for single-family homes, residential buildings, and public utility buildings.

Exterior moldings available at DW DECOR are exceptionally durable and resistant to adverse external factors. They withstand large temperature fluctuations, wind, rain, and UV radiation. The secret of their durability is the material from which they are made. Cornices, quoins, keystones, or façade strips are created from styrofoam covered with a layer of resin polymer coatings. Thanks to this, they are lightweight, easy to install and transport, and decorate the external walls of buildings for a long time. Exterior moldings make the building gain a new, transformed appearance. They also play a significant role in defining its styling. Decorative elements allow visually balancing its proportions. They reduce or enlarge individual elements of it visually.

Often, exterior moldings are also used for their functionality. Exterior moldings were mounted on roofs as cornices, creating not only an interesting decoration of the building but also facilitating the drainage of rainwater. They provide an excellent finish for window and door openings, as well as allow highlighting original elements of the building. They make even a minimalist building with a simple shape gain a unique aesthetic, next to which it is difficult to pass indifferently.

Among the proposals of DW DECOR, there are various types of exterior moldings. The most commonly used include:

Façade strips – elements with the widest range of applications. They most often surround doors and windows. They can also be used as a cornice separating individual floors. As a wall decoration, façade strips divide the building in a vertical or horizontal plane, allowing visually balancing its proportions. They give an impression of depth on the walls. They look great alone or in combination with other molding elements.

Cornices – are molding elements that protrude beyond the plane of the building. Thanks to this, they excellently protect the wall from water streaks. Cornices are most often mounted above windows or doors. They work perfectly as a way to shape the proportions of the building. The variety of forms makes them suitable for both historical buildings designed in a vintage style and modern, minimalist buildings.

Subsill supports – these are molding elements mounted directly under the sill. They most often appear in a duo with cornices and strips, forming a comprehensive finish for the window molding. On the one hand, subsill supports enhance the aesthetic qualities of the building's façade, on the other, they protect against water streaks and moisture. Made of modern synthetic materials, they are easy to install and very durable against adverse atmospheric conditions.

Quoins – molding elements used in finishing the corners of the building or in decorating larger façade surfaces. They also work well on plinths, pillars, or as a framing for windows or doors. They allow achieving an effect of segments resembling stone plates. They serve both a decorative and practical function – protecting the edges of the building from mechanical damage. They work excellently in masking irregularities and crooked edges.

Corner quoins – as their name suggests, are mounted on the edges of buildings, serving a decorative and protective function. Made of composite resin reinforced with carbon fiber, they are exceptionally durable against mechanical damage and adverse atmospheric conditions. Depending on the finishing of the edges of individual elements, they create a different visual effect. The variety of corner quoins allows perfectly matching their type to the style of the entire building.

Linear quoins – are molding elements mounted on large façade surfaces and taking the form of blocks with engraved decorative grooves. Various styles allow matching them to the character of the building and giving it an elegant appearance. They also work as a way to visually balance the proportions of the building. Linear quoins are also very durable and resistant to mechanical damage and atmospheric factors. Created from composite resin reinforced with carbon fiber, they provide an interesting finish to the façade for many years.

Brackets – are strictly decorative elements. Brackets most often complement cornices and subsill supports. They are also used with façade strips. They ensure that the moldings around doors and windows gain a consistent, elegant character. They also work excellently in visually modeling the proportions of the building.

Keystones – are most often mounted on window bands, in their central part. They usually have the form of a convex trapezoid or square protruding beyond the plane of the façade. Many models of keystones also work as decorations for corner windows and doorways. They are one of the details of moldings, giving it a coherent and original character. They are most often used in the style of manor houses, although they also work well in modern construction.
